Harvest Moon By Hand: The Loveliest Stars I've Ever Seen

Meet  Ann, who is also known as the brains behind Harvest Moon by Hand, a gorgeous shop of paper window stars, creative reuse kits, decor, natural handmade toys and more.  A mom to two beautiful girls adopted from China,  Ann enjoys crafting and homeschooling.  Located in Scandia, Minnesota she stays busy  networking, spreading the "Creative Reuse Bug" and stocking her store with great items.

Felt mice are so adorable and a natural eco friendly gift idea!

She explains, "I have  been an avid recycler since childhood when we would bring our recycling to a recycling facility (this was before there was curbside recycling). Recycling and reuse is second-nature to me, and I'm happy to continue to add products in my shop that reflect this commitment.  "
Different levels of the CRC are available in her store.
Ann takes her love for recycling a step further encouraging others. She runs a "Creative Reuse Club" and offers basic and deluxe membership packages for this in her store. She explains, "Harvest Moon by Hand’s Creative Reuse Club (CRC) is open to any person who is interested in organic, natural, and recycled products and crafty project ideas. "  Included in the Deluxe Club Membership is an official member card, special discounts,  quarterly newsletters, and  sample pack!  More information available here.  What a great way to spread the Creative Reuse bug!

I am captivated by these window stars.
Ahhhh, the stars.  I've been admiring the many in her shop for some time now, as her store is stocked with them. Perhaps it is the colorful creation and choice of styles, the overlap of colors or bright hues, or just the simple fact that they will brighten your day and make you smile that makes them so desirable.  Skilled in origami, Ann explains, " I make the stars by hand-folding small squares of paper, overlaying the folded
paper, and then gluing them together to create different patterns."  They are so lovely.

Wrapcycle Is In The Spotlight

Summer Spotlight
AUGUST-SUMMER SPECIAL 2010 SPOTLIGHT
Award Winner:  WrapCycle
Winner of the Team Vote!

Eco Padded iPad Wraps in 3 Different Colors, $42

Thanks to a huge team vote, I'm proud to spotlight WRAPCYCLE and Janet Michal of Atlanta, Georgia as this summer's Etsy Recycler's Guild award winner. Janet walked away from a corporate job in July of 2009 to concentrate full time on her business.  Let's learn more.

Janet says, "All things environmental and ecological are my passion  I drive very little and when I do it's in my Prius; I compost and recycle like mad; and I garden organically and sustainably - so this shop is a natural evolutionary step."

Eco Passport Cover Globe Trotter $14

Her creations combine her eco-consciousness with her ability to offer attractive designs at affordable prices. Earth-friendly cases for laptops, accessories such as passport covers and business card holders are just a few things you'll find.  Combined with custom detailing and embroidery, her fashions are both practical and useful.

Custom Embroidery 16-50 Characters, $5

Success and determination have made Janet's fashions a household name, and she works on her business in many ways, not just in her Etsy shop. She is a weekly vendor at the East Atlanta Village farmers market; has her own website, http://www.wrapcycle.com/; and most important, is seeking to expand her wholesale business. Janet goes the extra mile for her wholesale customers - primarily college and university bookstores - by offering a seasonal catalog in PDF format and special pricing.

Catalog in PDF format is a great addtion to the Wrapcycle website.

Janet says, "I partner with local recycling centers and thrift stores for materials.  I love cruising yard sales for interesting fabrics. There's not much I can't use! I am especially excited about the partnership I formed recently with a local fabric manufacturer to take on their samples and remnants. They informed me that they would have to throw them away if they couldn't find someone to give them to, so this is a real win-win situation."

The "Wrapcycle Workroom"

I must admit, I'm jealous Janet was able to leave her corporate job behind.  I ask if she has any regrets?  She explains, "I've never been happier and I've never looked back. One of the things I like best is getting ideas for new products from my customers. I started with LapTopWraps (which are laptop bags and sleeves), but my customers had visions of other products that could be made from recycled fabrics, and I was and am happy to try to realize their visions as well my own."

A customer suggestion led to these Eco Business Card Holders, sets for $75

Eco Padded LapTopWrap Sleeve with Fruit $28, is what Wrapcycle is known for!

Janet continues to market and promote her product on many greenie sites offers sales and promotions, in addition to using social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Her drive, determination and keen eye for fashion and quality craftsmanship are to be commended   Please visit her shop on Etsy, or contact her for special orders at 404-219-1980.

The Megan Leone Shop - Interview

by Jo Ferris
Look at this beautiful necklace!

Look closer!

Megan Leone's creative use of upcycled zippers make for an unusual and beautiful piece of art that you can wear.

Her use of color is stunning.

Megan's creativity shows a fun, vibrant and interesting product that is not only eco-chic but stylish as well.

People who are concerned for the environment and the amount of waste being produced by the human species, need not settle for less when it comes to fashion.

Sometimes we just need to look a little further than the closest or easiest place we usually shop and we will find something unique, something beautiful, something that inspires us.

Digging a little deeper into The Megan Leone Shop there are also these fabulous bracelet purses.

She has a whole section of these great purses each is one of a kind and made primarily from upcycled vintage materials. You'll be sure to find something to match your wardrobe among these pouches.

Whatever your favorite color combo or style choice, I'm sure you will be inspired by browsing through the handbags, earrings, necklaces and belts in The Megan Leone Shop. If you decide to purchase anything from her shop you can rest in the knowledge that you have made a great choice for the environment and for the handmade movement. Also you will own a piece that really is a work of art.

Q. What inspired you to begin making accessories made from salvaged materials?

A. It was natural for me to choose vintage and repurposed materials. I have always preferred second-hand items. There are so many benefits to purchasing vintage and repurposed materials... nostalgia, the thrill of the hunt, quality, and most of all making a kinder choice for the earth. I became very aware of how wasteful and unkind we humans were to the earth at a very young age after my parents decided we would clean up a 10 mile stretch of road. That experience really opened my eyes.

I have also enjoyed the thrill of the hunt since I was a little girl. I can remember clearly the first rummage sale I went to with my Mom where I was free to wander on my own. There is just something about second-hand items that new can not emulate. I do spend a lot of time searching for my materials, but it is so worth it! I get so much variety that way. A lot of times the materials inspire me to create something around them which leads to a wide array of designs. It is a rewarding purchase as the items never come in a shrink-wrapped package and I am often helping a local business or charity out with each purchase. It feels good to keep the men and women who sell at flea markets in business because without them a lot of those things would end up in landfills.

Q. What other steps in your daily life do you take to reduce your footprint on our earth?

A. I recycle, of course. It is the least we can do. I always take things that are no longer useful to us to a thrift shop, list it on sites like freecycle/craigslist or put it on the curb with a "free" sign. I enjoy shopping locally at farmer' markets and thrifting for most of our personal items. When purchasing new, I check labels for post-consumer products and how far the item traveled. I am willing to pay more knowing that my purchase is a vote.

Q. What do you hope people will learn from you, or what message are you trying to get across with the items you sell?

A. I have never thought of myself as a teacher. I am just trying to offer beautiful products that were made with care and love while being good to the wonderful place we live.

Q. How much do you LOVE the Etsy Recyclers Guild Team?

A. Etsy has a LOT of different sellers, it is so nice to have a place to go where like-minded designers are making things with the kind of labels I like to find on my purchases. I am honored to be among them!

Thank you Megan Leone for offering your items as a wonderful choice for the environmentally conscious.
