Got Beef? Explains Manufacturing Approval On Etsy

got beef brand
How a T-Shirt is made if you aren't a screenprinter

Green Lifestyle: Etsy Manufacturing Approval?

I won't forget the day Etsy sellers heard that third party manufacturing processes could be submitted for approval. Many sellers cringed at the idea since Etsy was always so small scale handmade....a crafter's dream come true. List your items for under a quarter and go with it.

I used to have an Etsy shop, but I don't anymore. Granted, I shop on Etsy, love Etsy, and I lurk quietly in the forums.   Being a good Etsian,  I won't "call out" , but there happened to be some questionable jewelry resellers for years and that's pretty much what happened to me.  I had a good design, but my items were priced so much higher, than the other shop. They took me so much time to make, and well, the shop in question listed so many more items than me and were always showing so high in results, one day I found my own design there! My little shop sort of fizzed out and died.  Could I have stayed and worked on my shop? Maybe. I didn't have time for all that. Half my fault for giving up.  For a long time I refused to buy a mass produced item. I hated commercial manufacturing processes and thought them the same as resellers. UNTIL NOW.   I look at things differently.

There's three types of reasons I am highlighting below, that I for one am glad Etsy approved their manufacturing processes.

Candy Wrappers
Shop: With Envy Parties, You can get these printed, or printable.

#1 Case Study

Original Design Gone Good : Etsy Makes Someone A Star Example : WithEnvyParties

Location: Oregon

Shop Keeper: Anitria, Mom of 2, Who Loves Caffiene

Items: Printables, Printed Materials and Everything You Need for a Party!

One example would be Anitria who is a graphic artist. She opened her shop on Etsy in June 2013. Now at January 2015, just a year and a half later, she's almost at 3000 sales.  She offers downloads that are printable.

For someone like me that doesn't have a clue what I'm doing, ordering the print version is much better.  Her cute and quirky designs are simply adorable, and she can print some things off herself. However, Anitria doesn't want to get into gluing together paper to make a notepad so she she decided to partner in with a local print shop so that she could offer these same adorable designs on notepads and stationary  to her customers at an affordable prices, better than if she spend hours trying to do it herself. It's still her designs on the items, and you bet your bottom dollar that Anitria is on top of that from start to finish, quality control checking to make sure her original designs are stunning.

THANK YOU ETSY!

Case Study # 2

Company Add Ons :  Creative Control of Your Brand   BigFatDaddys "Got Beef?"®

Location: Pennsylvania

Shop Keeper: Wayne & Cindy

Items: Hand Blended Spice, Apparel, Housewares

Wayne Schafer is a well known Pitmaster who travels selling his beef and BBQ and catering for celebrities.  What you may not know is that he and his wife also own the "got beef? ®" trademark on clothing and housewares as Wayne has used it for years.  Seeing that Wayne is a chef and cook and not a screenprinter, creating t-shirts for his company, would not be possible without outside help.

In this scenario, the Schafers are  indeed mom and pop with kids as pit crew.  Schafer fought the plethora of online of resellers who were using got beef? without licensing, and shut down thousands of listings per month spending lots of time and money to protect their brand, more than they make on selling it.  To them it's not about how many shirts , hats, hoodies, cups, or mugs they sell, but the quality of said products and their own reputation.

got beef tshirt design
A scribble made this shirt, for real.

Schafer's wife Cindy creates the designs, which change each year as old styles are phased out and new are created. Sometimes these starts with a scribble and a vision.  She picks the color palettes and mocks up a design for the final job.  All the while, keeping in mind her husband's ties to the brand, which can be traced back to his former restaurant. In this example, she wants a cow or bull on the shirt. Lucky for them, they have two great printing companies they have been working with for years of which were approved.

got beef swatches
These are swatches the print company helped with on the last run.

Wayne's wife Cindy says, "The print company works with me personally on all my designs. He actually sends me swatch samples to my Iphone and we discuss different styles. I may be hooked on a color and style that isn't compatible, but I mull it over and Tyler will find a way to make it work.  I actually feel like he's part of our process. We go back and forth on shirt styles and colors, and I know I talk his ear off. One shirt I design can literally take five or six proofs as I'm super picky.  He tells me what can and can't happen. We push the bar on designs, for instance, the got beef? this year on our unisex shirts is going way out of usual printable range. We wanted it to be huge, in your face, and that's what we got."

got beef girls tshirt
How a Scribble Became a Reality

The Schafers feel good knowing they have ways to design and build their products with the help of a manufacturer. When the shirts come in, they make and apply their own hang tags, which are all handmade. They control their own inventory and do their own shipping.

You won't see their shirts flying off the shelves. Original Got Beef?® items range about $28-$32 a shirt, on the high end range. Schafer sells them on the road, and several places online. Cheaper knock offs and variations on the internet sell for half, and the Schafers  have an uphill battle.

In fact, they refuse to make any mugs this year until the existing are off the market.  In this case Etsy has allowed these items to be made with the help of a third party manufacturer.

THANK YOU ETSY!

Case Study #3

Expansion of Your Brand : Photographer Offers Purses : Cindi Ressler

Location: Maine

Shop Keeper:  Cindi, Fine Art &Nature Photographer

Items: Photographs, Prints, Jewelry, Pillows and Bags

Cindi's photography is stunningly beautiful, and why shouldn't she expand and offer these items onto pillows and purses?   Cindi can print and do her own prints, jewelry, etc but as far as proper application onto a pillow or bag- best to get a third party in to help.  Obviously, they are using her original art, and Cindi looks over the finished product for approval before sending it to her customers. In this case, the squirrel on the pillow is simply fascinating, and a good seller in her store, and how cute he is.

THANK YOU ETSY!

On Etsy: Manufacturing Process Approval
I am nuts about this pillow in the Cindi Ressler shop.

About Etsy Approval

Going for Etsy approval in most cases is a lengthy process.  It's not just point, click, approve.  For one, getting approval doesn't take overnight, it can take weeks, or even months.

Etsy has the right to ask for photographs, pictures, and follow up with your manufacturers if they want. In this case sellers must be able to prove they are involved in the creative design process from start to finish and provide examples.  Photos are sometimes needed to prove you are doing what you say.

Maybe this will give you a new outlook on Manufacturing.  What do you think?  Tweet comments to me @AndreaMLitton

Eco Friendly T Shirts on Etsy Shop ArtisanTees.etsy.com
It's always nice to see artists going greener on Etsy, and in fact ArtisanTees is doing just that. Their T-Shirts are made by hand screen printing (the old way) in small batches on high quality, soft, fitted t-shirts with environmentally friendly water based ink.

Andy Natusch from Charleston, South Carolina is the shop owner, and he loves to create t-shirts.  He says, "I create t-shirts because it is my creative outlet. And being creative keeps me sane. I love coming up with new designs and then see how they turn out on a shirt. "

Not only that but he offers wood block prints in his shop as well.  How are these eco friendly? Well, Andy says, "My wood block prints are printed on high quality paper and sealed with a water based finish to give it a nice shine and protect it for at least a few hundred years."

Tzandals Upcycled Sandals From Tires Tanzania

tzandals recycled tire sandals
Many styles Tzandals are available. Local artisans make them in classic styles or more over the top!
Tires Upcycled Into Sandals?

Well here's something green and environmentally friendly. A group of  Eco conscious folks decided to do something to save the world and help out communities in Tanzania in the process. They found a way to get artisans involved in using old tires to make sandals.    "Tzandals - Tanzanian Tire Sandals"  were born out of discarded tires. Otherwise, tires are burnt releasing harmful chemicals into the environment, or clogging up already overcrowded landfills.  (Read about recycling tires on their About page)

tzandals
Many styles are available, and are all well crafted!

Support Local Economy of Tanzania and Help the Environment While Doing So

These sandals, are called Tzandals, and have the appropriate slogan, "Tread a New Path."  Their website indicates that their idea came from an idea to help the environment and help the people of the country at the same time. It's a way of connected local entrepreneurs (making the Tzandals) with the world market....

tzandals
No Worries when wearing Tzandals!

Walk a Mile or Several Thousand With No Worries

As featured on LivingGreen, green consumers can rest assured walking in these will be doing something good for the Earth. These are an Eco Friendly alternative for your feet, and in the process, help a country who needs it at the same time.  What's even better? They are priced affordable at $25-$30 range. They are well crafted and made to last. If a tire is supposed to last your car 50,000 miles, how long do you think it will last on your feet?

When you check out from their store, you can choose from a wide variety of styles, and even stipulate what cause (charity) you wish to support. If you are unsure, more information is outlined on their website.  There is also a Hakuna Matata (no worries) return policy.

Citizen Cashmere: For the Love of Wool and Goats

Citizen Cashmere
Citizen Cashmere is the GREEN face of cashmere.
Cashmere wool has been branded one the most comfortable and softest fibers out there. Cashmere gets its name from the soft wool of a certain species of goats.  In the past, mass production of cashmere clothing raised concern for eco friendly consumers. Mainly in regards to questionable unethical practices in the treatment of goats. Outlined here at Peta, a closer look into the wool industry blasts the way in which goats were sheared in cold weather and treated abusively.

Greenies have long been upset that goats have been plied with unhealthy growth hormones in their feed or directly to promote either mass production of goats or cross breeding all in the name of made-in-china mass produced cashmere clothing. If that's not bad enough,  additions of harmful and toxic dyes to the clothing itself was just the final straw for greenies to look the other way before purchase of a cashmere sweater.  Until now...because for one company, they have vowed to do things differently.
Citizen Cashmere
Citizen Cashmere is taking a stand, this above is part of their constitution!
Citizen Cashmere (Paris) has taken a stand in the industry--actually having a creedo if you will, that they call their Constitution! Basically, they have green practices and want their goats to be treated fairly, and live to ripe old ages of 25!  They will wait for wool, and are using Mongolia's goats as the regions' people were for hundreds of years for such fibers. If cashmere wool production is low, they don't stress about it. They aren't going to pump their goats up on steroids like some manufacturers.  They say, "Our herders harvest cashmere by hand-combing the goat’s molting winter coat once per year. Left to nature, this fur would naturally blow away in the wind. Citizen Cashmere never uses anything that contains the non-combed fur from our own Mongolian goats. That means we are against fleece and shearling.."
citizen cashmere sweater
Only $139.95, no matter what style you get. This is a VNeck Citizen's Cashmere sweater.

It's clear from their website that Citizen Cashmere is aimed at being greener in the manufacturre of clothing. Certainly they have integrity and values.   So I decided to dig deeper. Upon my inquiry, they issued a statement saying,, "We are doing something really unique because we own our own supply chain---so we are trying to do it right. We are super influenced from green peace's dirty laundry campaign when we started the brand. Our dyes come from Helsinki!"  In case you don't know what they are talking about, here's the video:

I really love the fact that in addition to their constitution, they have posted a strict quality control policy on their "fur"  and certainly don't cheat and use synthetic fibers. They just say NO to harmful or toxic dyes. They are on the cutting edge of fashion, offering many styles as opposed to just the traditional classic cashmere sweater.  Citizen Cashmere has found a way to offer a quality product with a green conscience.   Their sweaters are priced $139.95 and free shipping (and easy returns). They have a customer testimonial page where you share your video and may get it posted.  Here are customer testimonials.
Citizen Cashmere
Stylish half zip is an option as one of the sweater styles.

So now you can go feel all warm and fuzzy and soft, knowing this REAL cashmere goat sweater was made with green in mind. Now I know what I'm adding to my Christmas list.

Meet Red Umbrella Design Etsy Shop! ( RedUmbrellaDesign216 )

It's time to meet the very talented Marina Marquez,  with help from collage artist hubby George Potts from Cleveland Ohio.  Marina's shop, RedUmbrellaDesign216, brings us whimsical upcycled arts and home decor!  Marina says, "I'm a stay home mama who gets to play with my daughter Luna everyday. She is my inspiration and also our future. With this in mind, I enjoy making art, functional art, such as, owl mobiles, T'OWLS (owl stuffies), children's clothes, and collages out of organic, reclaimed/recycled materials. Packaging materials are also eco-friendly."
Screech owl mobile!
Marina was actually a sculptor who worked in metals, plastics, and recycled materials. Due to some of the techniques required for making her sculptures, she had to suspend the making of them during her pregnancy, which allowed her to explore other crafts such as these great "Scrappy Owl Mobiles" and TOWLS (stuffed owl pillows!)

Scrappy Owl Mobiles are so adorable, and she has a wide variety of species!

TOWLS are stuffed owl pillows!
Mini towls!
She explains, "The T'OWLS are made from reclaimed/recycled 100% cotton towels, stuffed with organic bamboo fiber, and hand stitched. They are 100% environmentally friendly! Care involves a gentle wash cycle & air dry!"

Not My Cup of Tea, Really (Collage, 2008)

Among other whimsical things you will find original collage prints, like these--these particular ones printed from her husband George Potts' original collages which can be bought framed or unframed. This collage art is wonderful and I admire his talents so.

Domestic Violence II (collage, 2008)

Be sure to welcome Marina to the team!

Pop Love Designs: Innovative Clothing by a Dynamite Duo

"Re-shape, Re-Think, Re-Work",  is the motto of this shop

Join me in welcoming one of our newer members, PopLoveDesigns.   PopLove is run by Andrea Hughes and her husband Shai Wallach, all the way from Tel Aviv, Israel.

Angela says, "Together we make limited-edition and one of a kind fashion from recycled materials. Our main line is woman's clothing and accessories, but we also have a small range of men's clothing."

So like most people, I wondered how she got her big start in fashion?

Andrea responds, "Shai & I both got our start in different areas of the fashion industry. It was a natural progression from there to start our own collection, especially after seeing the wastefulness of the fashion industry first-hand. We decided that we wanted our collection to not only be amazing and beautiful, but to be sustainable as well."

This tunic made from recycled materials is a real steal at only $29!

Andrea found us on Craftopolis, and read more about us and I guess you could say, we were the perfect fit! She is an couture clothing designer who is very interested in production of clothing with minimal harm to the environment. She uses upcycled and recycled items in her work, and is always interested in networking with other like minded designers and learning new and innovative green production processes.

Andrea says, "By recycling vintage fabrics we are creating eco friendly fashion, for a better future.".  They even take it one step further.  Their ccreen-printing is done using eco friendly water based inks.

Go Marilynesque with this one of a kind couture recycled dress for $59.

When reviewing all her wonderful spring, summer, fall and winter creations I wondered how she stays so motivated?

Andrea explains, "Motivation hasn't been too much of an issue for us so far, when you're two people, you tend to feed off of one another, BUT everyone has their moments. We like to check out local art galleries, go to the beach, or watch weird art-films , (The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover" is my favorite!."
I adore this "Footballer Long Sleeve Shirt" upcycled and priced at only $25.

So if motivation is her strong suit, I wondered what is the hard part of the designing biz?

Andrea says, "Selling is probably the hardest part of any business, but don't despair! Make sure you treasure each and every customer you get. Treat each and every customer like your business depends on them alone as ultimately it does! Create the ultimate shopping experience and earn your customers' loyalty."

Andrea often offers customers "free shipping" such as on this cool cami as a way to entice them.

Andrea also does a lot of social networking to promote her business and others.  She makes treasuries on Etsy as much as possible, and says, "The internet is full of places to get exposure and meet new people."

Please welcome her and be sure to find her all over the web at the below locations.
